&lt;p&gt;29 April 1990, the last day of the season: with the end of Serie A approaching, Italy is in countdown mode to the start of the World Cup on home soil, scheduled to begin on 8 June. The `Ciao` mascot is practically everywhere, but before concentrating on &lt;strong&gt;`Italia 90`&lt;/strong&gt; and Azeglio Vicini`s national team, the title must be decided and the race is between just two teams, &lt;strong&gt;Napoli&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt;, who have been battling it out for the entire season.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Alberto Bigon`s&lt;/strong&gt; Partenopei came into their final fixture with a two point lead over &lt;strong&gt;Arrigo Sacchi`s&lt;/strong&gt; Rossoneri. After ending the first half of the season five points behind winter leaders Napoli, AC Milan picked up the pace to catch up with their opponents after the 3-0 win on matchday 24 thanks to goals from &lt;strong&gt;Massaro, Maldini &lt;/strong&gt;and&lt;strong&gt; Van Basten&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As the lead continued to change hands, we reached the third last game with the two teams tied on 47 points. On 22nd April, &lt;strong&gt;Napoli&lt;/strong&gt; visited &lt;strong&gt;Bologna&lt;/strong&gt;, while at the same time &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; played in &lt;strong&gt;Verona&lt;/strong&gt;. It took Napoli just 15 minutes to virtually secure all three points: &lt;strong&gt;Careca&lt;/strong&gt; scored the opener in the 3rd minute, &lt;strong&gt;Maradona&lt;/strong&gt; doubled the lead in the 9th minute, &lt;strong&gt;Francini&lt;/strong&gt; made it three on the 15-minute mark. Bigon`s team just had to hope that AC Milan would drop points at the Bentegodi.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;However, &lt;strong&gt;Marco Simone&lt;/strong&gt; put &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; ahead in the 33rd minute, ease fears and the bad memories from their game against Verona of 17 years earlier, when in 1973 the Diavolo lost the match and the title on the final day. It seemed the right moment to rewrite history but &lt;strong&gt;Sotomayor&lt;/strong&gt; had other ideas and equalised in the 63rd minute. The final nail in the coffin came a minute from the end with &lt;strong&gt;Pellegrini`s&lt;/strong&gt; goal that completed Hellas Verona`s comeback and a 2-1 win. In Bologna it ended 2-4 and Napoli could look forward to the final day, the following week, masters of their own destiny and needing to only avoid defeat: &lt;strong&gt;Napoli&lt;/strong&gt; knew that &amp;nbsp;a win or a draw would seal the title, no matter what happened with &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And we return to that very day in late April 33 years ago. Naples is already primed for the occasion and dreams of a repeat of the historic first Scudetto that had been won three years earlier. At the &lt;strong&gt;San Paolo&lt;/strong&gt; there were 62,499 Neapolitan hearts beating in unison and suddenly accelerating when they see &lt;strong&gt;Diego Armando Maradona&lt;/strong&gt; enter the pitch.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Giuliani, Ferrara, Francini, Crippa, Alemao, Baroni, Corradini, De Napoli, Careca, Maradona, Carnevale. A disp.: Di Fusco, Bigliardi, Fusi, Mauro, Zola. Coach: Bigon.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These were the heroes of a city that couldn`t wait to celebrate: &lt;strong&gt;Materazzi`s&lt;/strong&gt; Lazio arrived in Naples and referee &lt;strong&gt;Sguizzato&lt;/strong&gt; had hardly blown his whitle to start the game when the hosts went ahead.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Maradona&lt;/strong&gt; put a free-kick into the box and &lt;strong&gt;Marco Baroni&lt;/strong&gt; (current &lt;strong&gt;Lecce&lt;/strong&gt; coach) got his head onto it and found a wat past Fiori. Everyone was waiting for Maradona`s goal, even his mother, who was present in the stands, but despite the chances and hitting the woodwork in the final minutes, the Argetine’s goal did not come.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Little did it matter, with the match going smoothly until the final whistle. &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; had won 4-0 at home against Bari, but it did not matter.
