Genoa vs. Lecce, fiery lunchtime fixture

Genoa haven’t lost since 10 December and will want to keep up the good run to stay away from the lower regions of the table, Lecce has to move in the standings

Genoa and Lecce will face off at the Marassi at lunchtime and will be looking for points to keep them far from the bottom of the table. Alberto Gilardino’s side haven’t lost since the defeat to Monza on 10 December, picking up six good results on the bounce, the last being a win over Salernitana. 10 points in the last 6 games have seen the Rossoblù jump to 25 points and get away from the bottom three.

Very different form for Lecce, however, 4 points below and having only bagged 1 point (1-1 against Cagliari at home) and one goal in the last 5 games, falling dangerously near to the bottom of the table.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bremer`s goal last time out was the eighth headed goal conceded by Lecce in Serie A this term, a negative record in the current championship; in general, only Empoli (60) and Sassuolo (56) have conceded more shots by head than Lecce so far (55).

Four of Genoa`s last six goals in Serie A have been scored from dead ball situations (2 from a penalty, 1 from a direct free kick and 1 from a corner), after a run of nine goals in a row from open play. In general, there are eight goals scored by the Grifone from dead ball situations so far, just two fewer than they managed in their previous top-flight campaign (10 in 2021-22).

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Lecce won the reverse fixture against Genoa (1-0, 22 September 2023) and will be looking to do the league double over them for the first time ever in Serie A – prior to the reverse fixture, Lecce had only won one of their previous 14 matches against the Ligurians in the competition (D5 L8).

Genoa are unbeaten at home against Lecce in Serie A: five wins and two draws in seven previous matches; in general, Genoa have played more domestic games without ever losing in the competition only against Venezia (8).

Genoa lost their last Serie A match against Lecce without scoring, having scored at least two goals in eight of the nine previous matches against them in the competition; the last time that Grifone did not score in two consecutive league matches against them dates back to 1998, in Serie B.

PLAYERS

Albert Gudmundsson has scored nine goals in Serie A this term and – after the 11 goals scored in Serie B 2022-23 – he could become the first Genoa player to reach double figures for goals in successive league campaigns since Diego Alberto Milito (Serie B 2003-04 and 2004-05).

Mateo Retegui scored his fourth Serie A goals of the season against Salernitana last time out and is looking to score in consecutive games for the first time in Serie A, last doing so in league competitions with Tigre in the Argentine Primera Division in May 2023 (v Gimnasia and Independiente).

One of the two goals scored by Remi Oudin in Serie A this term came in the reverse fixture against Genoa (22 September 2023, Lecce-Genoa 1-0), that it is also his only goal in the competition as a substitute; the Lecce number 10 ranks top among the Giallorossi for chances created (33) and chances created from dead balls (12) so far this season.
