The &lt;strong&gt;Madonna Assunta&lt;/strong&gt;, created by sculptor &lt;strong&gt;Giuseppe Perego&lt;/strong&gt;, has become a symbol of the city of Milan since it was placed atop the main spire of the Milan Cathedral in 1774.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Over the years, songs, banners and dances have often portrayed the now famous Golden Madonna, to whom the famous ballad written in 1935 by &lt;strong&gt;Giovanni D`Anzi&lt;/strong&gt; was dedicated: &#34;&lt;strong&gt;O mia bela Madunina&lt;/strong&gt; che te brillet de lontan Tuta d`ora e piscinina, ti te dominet Milan&#34;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The history of the statue, which also hides a lightning rod in the halberd, has been tied to &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; and Inter since 16 December 1899. &#34;We will be a team of devils. Our colors will be red like fire and black like the fear that we will incite in our opponents!&#34;: this is what &lt;strong&gt;Herbert Kilpin&lt;/strong&gt;, founder of the Rossoneri, said in the historic first Headquarters of the club, the Fiaschetteria Toscana in Via Berchet in Milan.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the very first derbies, the newly born Rossoneri played against la Milanese, SEF Mediolanum, and Enotria Goliardo. But one night at the beginning of March, at exactly 11.30 pm following a dinner at the ‘l’Orologio’ restaurant in Piazza Duomo, 44 dissident members of the AC Milan society created &lt;strong&gt;FC Internazionale.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The idea was to make it easier for foreigners resident in Milan to play football, given that the Rossoneri had come to terms with the FIGC&amp;nbsp; that required the teams participating in the championship not to register non-Italian players in addition to those who were already in the team.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;div class=&#34;hm-image-wys&#34;&gt;&lt;img src=&#34;https://img.legaseriea.it/vimages/65018fa4/duomo-sito.png&#34; alt=&#34;duomo-sito.png&#34; style=&#34;display: block; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; margin-bottom: 16px; max-width: 100%; width: auto; pointer-events: none;&#34;&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Exactly to distinguish themselves from relatives, one of the founders, the futurist painter Giorgio Muggiani, chose black and blue as the team colours, to pay homage to the clear sky that night in Piazza Duomo and to literally contrast with the red of AC Milan.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;From March 9 1908, the Madonnina began to witness the rivalry, sporting clashes and banter that began to define the life of the city. After a first friendly match played in Chiasso, the first official competitive match was played on 10 January 1909 at Campo Milan in Porta Monforte.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The differences between the two Milanese clubs that were immediately very clear, became even more defined during the 1920s: &#34;&lt;strong&gt;baùscia&lt;/strong&gt;&#34; against &#34;&lt;strong&gt;casciavìt&lt;/strong&gt;&#34;, or rather, the Inter fans of the &#34;Milano bourgeoisie&#34; who mostly lived in the city limits and went to the stadium in suit and ties, against the “cacciaviti”, (screwdrivers in English), who lived on the outskirts of the city and were certainly less elegant than their counterparts, named for the working class symbol of the screwdriver.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The two very distinct social strata of the time at merged, however, on derby days. From the very first year, San Siro has hosted the CEO and his employee side by side on even ground in its 35,000 seats,&amp;nbsp; ready for them to provoke each other in jest for 90 minutes straight.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Originally home to &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt;, from 1947 the &#34;&lt;strong&gt;Scala del Calcio&lt;/strong&gt;&#34; also became the home ground of the Nerazzurri who until then had played at the Campo di Ripa di Porta Ticinese and at the &lt;strong&gt;Arena Civica&lt;/strong&gt; in Parco Sempione.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;And the Madonnina, covered for 5 years by a grey-green cloth in 1939 to avoid giving a target to bombers during the Second World War, was able to return to enjoying the derby from above.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the meantime, the rivalry between &#34;baùscia&#34; and &#34;casciavìt&#34; transformed into that between &#34;&lt;strong&gt;muturèta&lt;/strong&gt;&#34; and &#34;&lt;strong&gt;tramvèe&lt;/strong&gt;&#34;: different nicknames but with the same ideas behind them, since the mockery also extended to the way in which the fans arrived at the stadium, the Nerazzurri on scooters, and the Rossoneri on the tram.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Time passes, but not the rivalry and the spirit: the fans are still tied to their nicknames, claiming them and holding them aloft as symbols of identity, just like the Madonnina, which on Saturday at 18:00 CEST will once again witness a great derby.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;(Photo LaPresse)&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
