Verona and Lazio kick off Saturday’s fixtures

After the last-minute draw with Udinese, Verona will be looking for more points to move up the table, Lazio need some continuity to get back on the path towards a European spot

Significant points at stake at the Bentegodi between Hellas Verona and Lazio on their respective journeys towards salvation and Europe. The hosts find themselves second from the bottom with 10 points, together with Cagliari, currently in the relegation zone despite being unbeaten in their two previous matches (2-2 against Lecce, 3-3 against Udinese).

Points are needed, perhaps even a victory to get out of the relegation zone but Lazio will also be determined to return home with all three points: the Biancocelesti currently sit in ninth with 20 points, four fewer than Roma and Napoli who are currently battling it out for the last Champions League spot.

Having already secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa, Maurizio Sarri’s team can now concentrate on the league: Lazio have only won at least two consecutive matches in the league so far on one occasion (three, against Atalanta, Sassuolo and Fiorentina on either side of the international break).

DID YOU KNOW?

Hellas Verona have conceded 15 goals in their last seven league matches - an average of 2.1 per match - after having conceded just six goals in the first seven matches in Serie A this season (0.9 on average per match).

Lazio is one of the two teams who have not yet gained any points from a losing position in Serie A this season (along with Genoa), on the other hand, Hellas Verona is one of the two teams, with Napoli, who have not dropped any points from a winning position (also the gialloblù have only taken the lead twice in the league in 2023-24, fewer than any other team)

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Hellas Verona are unbeaten in four of their last six Serie A matches against Lazio (W2, D2), having lost six of the previous seven in the competition (D1).

Lazio have scored in all of their last nine away games in Serie A against Hellas Verona: the last “gialloblù” home clean sheet against the Bianconcelesti in the competition dates back to 22 October 2000 (game won 2-0 with an own goal by Favalli and with the Adrian Mutu’s first goal in Serie A).

PLAYERS

Cyril Ngonge has scored four goals in 13 matches in Serie A this season, surpassing his three goals in 14 matches played in 2022-23; the last foreign Hellas Verona player who scored at least five goals in a single top-flight championship before turning 24 years old was Nico López in 2014/15 (he ended the tournament with five goals).

Ciro Immobile has scored 10 goals against Hellas Verona in Serie A: only Gabriel Batistuta has scored more goals against the gialloblù (11) in the history of the competition.
