Coppa Italia finalists set to be decided

Lazio vs. Juventus and Atalanta vs. Fiorentina: who will reach the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa 2023/24 final?

180 minutes still to play to decide who will go the final in Rome, at the stadio Olimpico, on 15 May. On Tuesday, at 20:45 CEST, Lazio take on Juventus, while at the same time on Wednesday Atalanta face Fiorentina.

Juventus have a two-goal lead to defend following the first leg at the Juventus Stadium and are looking to reach their 22nd final of the competition’s history.

Instead, Lazio will be looking to turn around the result and will have to win, and win convincingly. The Biancocelesti can only reach the final by winning with at least three-goal margin, otherwise it will be Max Allegri’s side who will book their place in the final at the Olimpico.

If, however, the match were to end with a victory for Lazio and a two-goal difference (any result) it would go to extra time and potentially penalties.

Juventus have always reached the Copa Italia final on the ten previous occasions they had won the first leg of the semi-final, while overall they have come out on top in the last nine two-legged affairs when in front. The last defeat dates back to the two-legged final in 2002 against Parma (2-1 win at home and a 1-0 defeat at the Tardini, with the Ducali winning courtesy of the away goals rule).

Looking to the game in Bergamo, Mandragora’s solitary goal in the first leg provides two results out of a possible three for Fiorentina, who will reach their second final in a row in the event of a win or a draw. However, if Atalanta were to prevail with just a single goal difference, the tie would go to extra time and potentially penalties. If the side from Bergamo were to win with a difference of two or more goals then they would return to the final three years after their last appearance.

Atalanta have reached the final on five of the previous seven occasions they have played in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, including the two most recent against Fiorentina (2018/19) and Napoli (2020/21). The Viola are the only team they have faced at least twice at this stage of the competition (1W, 1D in the 2018/19 season).

After getting there in the 2022/23 season, Fiorentina could reach the Coppa Italia final for two editions in a row for the second time in their history (1960 and 1961). It would be the first, however, in a two-legged semi-final tie.
