Empoli and Genoa look to climb the table

Genoa host Empoli at the Marassi, where they can perhaps put their relegation fears definitively to bed

It is a huge match at 15:00 CET at the Luigi Ferraris. Genoa, despite their recent loss to Inter, sit nine points above their opponents, who are third from bottom and deep in trouble. A win for Genoa today would all but guarantee safety from the drop.

Empoli, however, must put an end to their poor streak and win for the first time since 8 December (4-1 against Verona). Since that victory, they have only picked up two points in eleven games, and they have now slipped down into the relegation zone.

HEAD TO HEAD

Genoa are unbeaten in their last 10 Serie A games against Empoli (W5 D5); the Tuscans` last win against the Grifone in the top-flight was back on 24th October 2015 (2-0 at the Castellani stadium).

Empoli’s only away win against Genoa in Serie A came in the the first of their seven such attempts (D4 D2): 1-0 on 27th April 2008, with a goal by Ignazio Abate under Luigi Cagni.

DID YOU KNOW?

Genoa have won their last three league games at the Ferraris without conceding goal, while the last time they achieved four home wins in a row in Serie A was between February and April 2016 (five in that case under Gasperini); in addition, the Grifone could also win four consecutive home games without conceding a goal for the third time in their history in Serie A, after May-September 1991 and December 1939-February 1940.

Across their last 11 league games, Genoa have never repeated the same result in two games in a row (W4 D3 L4), losing against Inter in the most recent one.

Since 13th December 2024, Empoli have picked up the fewest points in the Big-5 European leagues: just two in 11 matches, while conceding 28 goals in the period (2.5 on average per game).

Empoli have lost their last four league games, and could lose five matches in a row in Serie A for the first time since the period between June and September 2023 (six in that case).

This is a match between the team that has scored the fewest goals in the first half (Genoa, five) and the club that has netted the fewest goals in the second half (Empoli, seven) in Serie A this season.

Empoli have conceded the most total shots (395) in Serie A this season; in addition, only Monza (219) have attempted fewer total shots than the Tuscan club (246) in Serie A in 2024/25.

PLAYERS

In the last four Serie A seasons (since 2021/22) Andrea Pinamonti has scored 37 goals (including 13 for Empoli in 2021/22 – his best season in terms of goals in the competition). Only Ciro Immobile (46) has netted more goals among Italian players in this period.

Sebastiano Esposito has scored seven away goals in the current league season, while only one player has netted more away goals in a single Serie A campaign in Empoli`s history: Francesco Tavano in 2005/06 (eight). He has already scored two goals against Genoa in Serie A, a joint-record for him against a single opponent in the top-flight (also two against Hellas Verona).
